Youngsters at Manurewa Marae’s school holiday programme were over the moon when Twilight star Tinsel Korey dropped in for a quick visit.
The Canadian actress plays Emily Young, fiancée of werewolf Sam Uley, in the hit movie.
Korey is in New Zealand with her co-stars Charlie Bewley and Bronson Pelletier as part of the Armageddon entertainment expo.
But she managed to get time off on Monday to visit the kids at the request of her good friend Jay Tewake, who runs the free holiday programme.
Korey, 32, was welcomed on to the marae with a powhiri and regaled with songs, haka and dance learnt under Tewake’s tuition.
She ran an acting workshop for the children during the day, focusing on scene studies and character development.
It’s not so much about inspiring them to follow acting as a career, as it is for them to learn a form of self-discovery, she says.
”I think all youth should have art in their lives.
”I find when I do workshops and stuff the kids actually teach me so much, and I think it’s sort of a shared experience.”
Korey, who is from the Anishinaabe tribe of North America, says she’s been struck by the similarities between Maori culture and her own, including family structure, beliefs, language and respect for the environment.
And she believes different indigenous cultures should jump at any chance to learn from each other.
”What I love about New Zealand in general is that everyone has absorbed and embraced the Maori culture,” she says.
Holiday programme organiser Mika Haka says participants didn’t know before signing up that they would meet a Twilight celebrity.
He wanted to avoid thousands of people turning up for only one day of the programme.
